Ballater

 The highland games are a celebration of scottish culture with sporting events that are typical of the rural highland life, tossing trees, throwing boulders and long jumps.

The costumes are all superb and the tartans (plaids)stand for tbe clans in the area.  Gingers were everywhere as well as big moustaches.




All went swimmingly till some big clouds showed up and hailed and thundered.

The bagpipers were the last to fold up and get out if the storm. There were many young pipers and drummers.



Tuesday. two days ago the King was here as he was in Balmoral, not far from here.

A walk in the highlands

 This morning was overcast but rain was nit in the forecast. We left Ballanter and took a hike 10 miles from there at Burn O Vat. We saw lots of shades of green, some swans, a young buck, a Milan or red kite, rabbit scat and a herd of deer (in a fenced in barrier which meant they were raised for meat, not wild. For that matter we saw lots of sheep and cows too.) There was also a large stele that was Pict, a celtic cross was represented on it. The knot design represented eternity for them, at least that is what the sign said. It was the last vestige of an old fort. We walked 7 kilometers then went to have lunch in a tavern in the mountains. There are small ski resorts in these hills but most of the land is owned but whisky companies that grow wheat and barley, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, etc.  The Spey river feeds most of these distilleries with the fresh water to make good whisky. Scones

We We arrived in Scotland to a beautiful sunny sky.  The heather is in bloom in the highland but it was very hot.  We headed north and stopped in Scone an old site where 40 Scottish king were ordained. On the Moot, a mound where the cheiftains unloaded the dirt from there boots onto the ground, the future king stood on the “Stone of Destiny, thought to have come from Ireland and was declared king. The mound was formed from all that dirt in their boots. The same stone was taken in the 16th century. to Westminster to maintain the royal legitimacy to the throne as it is placed under it. This is a copy of the stone. The place is called Scone and we were wodering if thais where the  padtry is from. These are some of the landscapes we saw driving on a narrow road up to Ballater after stopping at Scone.  Lee got engaged in the toilet. Flying the coup

 Hi Friends,   We are on the road again but this time to sunny Scotland.  Here in the south of France the temperatures are soaring in the middle of August, time for a change of scenery. I will update as we cover the moors, rivers and coasts to Brigadoon.
